Seasonal changes in body weight, pineal hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase activity (HIOMT) and pineal gland weight were analysed for adult male viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus). The viscacha is a nocturnal rodent restricted to the Argentinian pampas which lives in large colonies in extensive burrow systems. Animals were captured monthly, at night, near their burrows, in the vicinity of San Luis, Argentina, from February to December. Animals were killed, and pineal glands weighed and assayed for HIOMT activity. The greatest HIOMT activity was observed in August (winter). The body weight of viscacha did not change significantly throughout the year, whereas the weight of pineal gland exhibited significant variations in some months of the year. Pineal gland in these nocturnal rodents responds to annual changes in photoperiod, and possibly to other environmental factors.

Genetic variability in plasma melatonin in sheep is due to pineal weight, not to variations in enzyme activities.

This study was conducted to determine the origin of the high variability in the mean nocturnal plasma melatonin concentration (MC) in sheep. Two extreme groups of 25 lambs each [low (L) and high (H)] were obtained by calculating their genetic value on the basis of the MC of their parents. The MC of lambs was significantly higher in the H group than in the L group (L: 189.7 ± 24.4 vs. H: 344.1 ±...

Octomys mimax (Rodentia: Octodontidae)

Octomys mimax O. Thomas, 1920, the viscacha rat, is a surface-dwelling rodent, endemic to the Monte biome of western Argentina. The genus Octomys is monotypic and represents a basal clade within the family Octodontidae. O. mimax is strictly herbivorous and is found in low-elevation arid environments characterized by galleries or rock formations. In these environments, O. mimax nests within rock...

Laccase Activity in CTAB-Based Water-in-Oil Microemulsions

The aim of this study was to develop a microemulsion system as a medium for laccase-catalyzed reactions. Phase behavior studies were conducted by constructing partial pseudo-ternary phase diagrams for systems comprising of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), various organic solvents as the oil phase (i.e., hexane, cyclohexane, heptane, octane, isooctane, toluene, isopropyl myristate), two co...
